Having spent the last week holed up in an RV in the Nevada desert at the Burning Man festival I was a little overwhelmed by what I was going to write about this week. From the minute we rolled into Black Rock City I felt as though my mind was being stretched beyond belief with the sensory overload that is Burning Man. I had the privileged to meet some of the most inspired, creative and humble people of my life (some rather startlingly naked) and hear the stories of how their art came to be part of this temporary city.

So while my mind tries to slowly take note of all these experiences, this week’s Who’s Awesome is for the organisation that brings the art to Burning Man and then out into world. The Black Rock Arts Foundation (BRAF) was founded by the founders of Burning Man. Larry Harvey and his crew recognised that the art at Burning Man has rekindled one of art’s most valuable functions: connecting community members in creation, curiosity, and wonderment. From their website “the BRAF was established to bring this modality of creating and coexisting with art to the rest of the world, with the vision that community-driven, inclusive, and interactive art is vital to a thriving culture”.

Through an extensive grants program BRAF works with communities particularly in San Francisco and the Bay Area but also around the world to produce pioneering works of public art that work to connect communities but also empower individuals.

While I try to work out where all the bruises on my legs came from, you can read more about BRAF’s grants, current projects and much more at http://blackrockarts.org/ and for anyone that needs a holiday next September maybe jump on this website and get yourself geared up for a ticket to Burning Man! http://www.burningman.com/
